The following is an extract from the white paper:
“Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis is characterized by a steady accumulation of fixed disability after an initial relapsing remitting course. About 85% of MS patients are initially diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS. Of these patients, approximately 65 – 85% eventually develop secondary progressive MS. This process often begins 15 to 20 years after the initial MS diagnosis. There is no consensus on the mechanisms responsible for transition to this stage of the disease, but studies indicate that acute episodic inflammation that typifies ‘relapse’ may be superseded by a more persistent chronic inflammation that underpins further neurodegeneration in the secondary progressive phase of the disease.”
