This week was the grand opening of The StartUp Lounge, a new innovation center located within the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The center aims to be a collaborative space that will bolster the development and entrepreneurial efforts of institutions within the North Texas Region.
The StartUp Lounge will include representation from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies, the UTA schools of business, science and engineering, and TECH Fort Worth.
In a press release about the opening, Dr. Joe Barrera, PhD, the Director of the Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies, stated “It is an open access meeting space where inventors/entrepreneurs can come and network with potential business partners. This would include anything from vetting and refining ideas, to forming management teams to taking technologies to market”.
Dr. Barrera continued, “Furthermore, it is a space that can be used to educate and train future entrepreneurs in hopes of increasing successes for our students, faculty and community.”
The Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies is a research resource located at UTA. The institute offers access to instrumentation and support by research experts in areas including biochemistry, biology, chemistry, engineering, geoscience, nano-technology and neuroscience.
About the Institute
The Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies was established February 28th, 2013 as a result of the partnership between the University of Texas at Arlington and the Shimadzu Corporation. It is comprised of multiple instrumentation facilities, each with a different research focus, and operated under the “centralized research resources” model. Founded on the premise that eliminating barriers to research technologies and creating a mutual space for interaction promotes scientific advances that traditional approaches cannot, this holistic and interdisciplinary approach is crucial in driving leading-edge research with a major impact on scientific study and entrepreneurship. Each center is staffed with appropriate expertise bringing an additional level of accessibility that traditionally has not existed in research facilities.
