The Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation has teamed up with Memorial Hermann Health System and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School in order to fulfill its mission of bringing relief to the millions of people around the globe afflicted with debilitating headaches by funding research focused on finding a cure. The Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation was recently launched by Houston-born Jimmy Erwin in memory of his son Will, who suffered from both migraines and cluster headaches. Home to the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex, the opportunities for advanced medical research in Houston are numerous.
“This is a condition that impacts the lives of people all over the world. It’s time for an organization to step up and fix the problem and that’s what we intend to do,” stated Mr. Erwin, Founder and President of The Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation.
Although debilitating headaches affect twelve percent of the American population, migraines and cluster headaches included, research for finding a cure is severely underfunded. In 2014, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimated $45 million of annual funding support be dedicated to headache and migraine research, which represents a mere .03 percent of the total $146 billion allocated to medical research. Through its global fundraising efforts, the Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation aims at dramatically increasing funding for studying these neurological disorders and, more importantly, bringing an end to the pain they cause.
Although funding for headache research remains low, the Texas research community has been focused on studying and treating headaches. In January, BioNews Texas reported on how a new surgery for migraine headache relief is being pioneered at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and the results thus far have been incredibly promising. In October of 2013, MD Anderson researchers reported on how electronic stimulation of the peripheral nerve reduces chronic headaches by 70%.
The Will Erwin Headache Research Foundation is a component fund of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, and it is a registered 501c3 organization. Donations can be made at www.cureheadaches.org.
