Houston-based Pernix Therapeutics Holdings, Inc. has announced a key addition to its executive staff, adding Rick Shalaby as the company’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The new hiring became effective on March 17th, 2014.
According to a recent company press release, Mr. Shalaby’s experience in the industry spans a wide spectrum of successful endeavors that will prove valuable to Pernix. In his twenty three-year career in biotech, ten of those were spent in executive leadership positions. Prior to his new role at Pernix, Shalaby worked in virtually every facet of biotech sales, including big pharma, service providers, and small, start-up pharmaceutical companies. He worked for eighteen years with Merck and Co. Inc., moving up through the company’s ranks in a wide range of positions relating to analytics, operations, market research, marketing, managed care, culminating in being promoted into senior level positions in sales. During that time, he managed over two hundred sales professionals in specialty and primary care sales.
Pernix reports that Shalaby’s executive vision includes deploying novel managed care pricing strategies, as well as promotional message development and sales training tactics developed at his time at Merck — all qualities that are valuable to a drug manufacturer like Pernix. This experience, combined with his proven motivational style with sales teams, broad based background, and his ability to create and sustain positive cultures is a perfect fit for Pernix at this time in the company’s life cycle.
In addition to his experience at Merck, Mr. Shalaby’s time at PDI as vice president of sales led him to manage the company’s sales operations. During his tenure there, he created and oversaw eight distinct sales teams, which comprised a sales team of one hundred and fifty sales professionals. Although dealing with a relatively large salesforce, Shalaby was effective in developing and deploying new sales methodologies “utilized by his many clients and that knowledge facilitated successful product launches and ultimately positive sales results for each of his teams.” Shalaby’s time at Amarin Pharmaceuticals as Vice President of Sales led him to build a three hundred-person sales force, which was instrumental in launching Amarin’s first commercial brand. Mr. Shalaby has also been on numerous advisory boards and is on the board of directors of Poly-Med Inc.
